Cummins standby generators

We're an authorized Cummins dealer, which means the sizing, the sale, the installation and the service all come from one place. Nobody points at anybody else when something needs sorting out.

What a standby generator actually does

It isn't a portable unit you drag out of the shed and fill with gas in the dark. A standby generator sits outside on a pad like an air conditioner condenser, runs on natural gas or propane, and is wired to an automatic transfer switch at your panel. When the utility drops, the switch senses it, starts the generator, and picks the house up — usually within seconds, whether or not anybody's home.

Around here that matters more than it does in a lot of places. Ice storms take lines down across Laclede, Camden and Pulaski counties, and rural outages don't always get restored quickly. If you're on a well, no power also means no water. If you're on septic with a lift pump, it means worse than that.

Sized honestly

The most common mistake in this business is selling somebody more generator than they need, or less than will do the job. We walk the panel with you and list what actually has to stay on — furnace, well pump, refrigerator and freezer, sump, a few circuits of lighting and outlets, and whatever else you'd genuinely miss. Then we match a unit to that load. Sometimes that's a whole-house unit. Often it's smaller and cheaper than what you were expecting.

Common Questions

Questions about generators

How much does a whole-house generator cost installed?

It depends on the size of the unit and the work at your house — the transfer switch, the pad, the distance from the panel, and the gas line. The honest way to find out is a walkthrough: we look at your panel, list what has to stay on, and price the unit that actually covers it. Call 417-588-3497 for that.

What size generator do I need for my house?

Less than most people assume, if you size it to what must stay on rather than to everything at once. A furnace, well pump, refrigerator, freezer, sump and a handful of lighting and outlet circuits is a very different number than running central air and an electric range simultaneously. We do that calculation with you before recommending anything.

Does a standby generator start automatically?

Yes. That's the whole point of the automatic transfer switch. It senses the outage, starts the generator, and transfers the load — typically within seconds — whether or not anyone is home. When the utility comes back, it transfers back and shuts the generator down.

Will a generator run my well pump?

Yes, and for anyone on a well it's usually the first circuit on the list. Well pumps draw a big surge when they start, so the sizing has to account for starting current, not just running watts. That's one of the places an undersized unit shows up immediately.

Do generators need maintenance?

Yes, and it's the part people skip. A standby unit exercises itself weekly, but it still needs oil, filters and a real inspection on a schedule. We service what we install — an unmaintained generator has a habit of failing on exactly the night it's needed.
